DCA Charity Shoot 2008

The following report by Baron Lush on the DCA Double Portsmouth Charity Shoot was sent to the Perthshire Advertiser after their photographer failed to show up. No explanation or apology was offered.
On Sunday, the 17th August, sixteen archers assembled at Dunkeld Park for the inaugural meeting of the Dunkeld Company of Archers. With fair weather and congenial company, the archers enjoyed shooting ten dozen arrows at twenty yards in a Double Portsmouth round and additional arrows in a knock-out Wand competition, a practice dating back to the Middle Ages.
Prizes for both the top competitors and raffle winners were kindly donated by several local businesses including McEwens of Perth, Dickson & MacNaughton and the Scottish Liqueur Centre and refreshments were supplied by the Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel.
The charity event raised £146 for the Macmillan nurses at Perth Royal Infirmary’s new palliative care building and marks a somewhat novel approach to raising funds for badly-needed inpatient and day-care services for a growing number of people affected by cancer. The unit will also offer a much more local service for patients and their relatives who currently have to travel to Dundee where the facilities and services are already under considerable pressure.
Baron Charlie Lush, chairman and co-founder of the Dunkeld Company of Archers, comes from a long-established medical family himself and, having lost his own father to cancer in 1990, welcomes any new initiative which will make the lives of cancer patients and those who care for them more comfortable. He also hopes that this initiative will encourage others to look for new and enjoyable ways to support such a worthwhile cause.
The winning competitors were as follows:
Recurve:
1st Ian Hendy with 119 hits, 775 score
Longbow:
1st Bosco Hazard 118, 610
